Japan's wholesale prices up 2.2% in FY 2007

[Date:2008-04-12] From: [Size:B Mid S]
TOKYO, April 11 (Xinhua) -- Japan's wholesale prices registered a 2.2 percent increase on a year-on-year basis in fiscal 2007, the fastest pace since 1989 when the index stood at 2.6 percent, Japan's central bank said Friday.

The Bank of Japan (BOJ), in a preliminary report released Friday, attributed the inflation to continued surges in oil, steel, food and other commodity prices in global markets.

The 2.2 percent growth in fiscal 2007, excluding the special factor of sales tax, was the fastest since fiscal 1980 when the wholesale prices posted a 12.5 percent jump, said the report.

In yen terms import prices advanced 8.2 percent while export prices slid 0.2 percent.

In terms of contract currencies import prices climbed 10.1 percent whereas export prices inched up 0.2 percent.
